Mobile broadband and Apple Snow Leopard

There's been reported severe issues and incompatibilities when trying to use mobile broadband connection software with the new version of Apples operating system for Mac called Snow Leopard.

The error occurring is a hard (kernel) crash of the Apple Mac operating system. In other words, access to Internet using mobile broadband is impossible. The Mac system itself survives, and there are no reports of data loss.

I have very little information so far, but affected connection clients reported until now are from Telenor (Sweden), 3 (Three) (UK) and O2 (UK).

I'm working on getting more info. Are you affected? Please let us know more in a comment below, and please provide:

* What you experience
* Mobile Broadband provider name (such as Three or Telenor)
* Country
* Operating system
* Computer type

[Update] Vodafone (UK) has problems as well.

[Update no. 2] Virgin (UK) also has problems.

Both my iMac (upgraded from Tiger) and MacBookPro (upgraded from Leopard) had problems with o2 (UK) mobile broadband.

Had to remove the connector from Network, then send MobileConnect (the application) to Trash and reinstall.

Works fine again now on both macs

I realized that it was something rather simple and silly on my mac. When I upgraded to snow leopard, apple seemed to turn my huawei E170 settings (under Network in System Preferences) to the apple default. (vendor: Apple, Model: Dial up device) The computer kept trying to connect then immediately disconnect.

It was a simple matter of resetting the vendor to "Generic" and re-designating the model as a GPRS (GSM/3G) device. Then imput the APN (which was left blank) of my telco (in the case of Starhub in Singapore, the APN is shwap)

everything seems to be back to normal now! Hope that helps.

Make sure you delete the old version of Mobile Connect software from Apps (use App Cleaner) and delete any existing entries for the modem from the network preferences, then follow the instructions here http://www.kimhoong.com/?p=200 and you should be good to go. Also make sure you aren't running in 64-bit kernel mode.

Just solve my issue this morning

For starhub user, u can go to

www.starhub.com/.../firmwareupgrade.html

Look for your device and download the software updates.

But there is an issue to be noted.

As the updated software is in exe formatt thus the user must

find a pc
plug in the device
close the program that was open automatically
run the updating software downloaded.
follow the instructions and it will update the device automatically.

once done
plug in the device into ur mac and install it like a normal program.

Virgin does not have a compatible Mobile Broadband for Snow Leopard.
Confirmed by their Help line 16/10/2009
However their service and advice was good as usual.
It may be a number of weeks before they can supply a suitable product.

I have found similar issue on E5838 (Huawei) provided by PCCW. The mobile partner has kept crashing the kernel (OSX 10.6.2) randomly.

I love mobile broadband!
